Wonderful descriptions and depictions without becoming cliche. A grand point is made concerning the lesser of two evils and the point made is that it is not a choice at all. my only wish is that all of his books were translated into English. Truth be told this is the best book I've read in years. Unlike Tolkien's world this is a world of grays not black and whites.
I found that it is much more enjoyable in writing than in playing the game. I also, came by the book after playing the game. I just overall really enjoy reading it, and would give it a very high recommendation. Sapkowski is masterful in his descriptions of the monsters. I really enjoyed the game but, I enjoyed the book more. I will first say I am not a book reader I own probably 10 books and 324 video games.
A cunning sorcerer. Taken as a child, trained, given potions and other treatments to turn him into what he is. It was fun to see how Sapkowski twisted fairy tales and fairy tale creatures into something bold and interesting. The Last wish is written by Polish sensation Andrzej Sapkowski, recent winner of the David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy. I'll look forward to reading Blood of Elves, and getting my first crack at an entire novel with The Witcher.Score: 8/10. The Witcher is one of those tough guy heroes that's easy to get behind. An exciting, fast paced group of short stories with a bold protagonist.
And a cold-blooded killer. Then again, I have been reading The Wheel of Time, so I'm used to a little more exposition and a little more detail.okay, a lot more detail.Overall, I enjoyed this book. My only complaint about the novel was that the text seemed a little short, almost as if it somehow suffered from translation. His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world. I wouldn't say that this book gives the kind of depth that I would have liked to see to a character like Geralt, but things certainly could have been worse.
Geralt de Rivia is a witcher. Deadly with a blade, Geralt is tough, sarcastic and thoroughly enjoyable. and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.The book is basically a collection of short stories involving Geralt of Rivia, aka The Witcher. A merciless assassin. But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good .
Read this book, and when you finish it go read it's follow-up, "The Blood of Elves." I really think we should support this budding author so that all his future works come quickly to the English speaking world. The stories are great but it is the concise and poetic prose that really makes this so beautiful. I started reading this because of the video game but the book quickly transcended that and became a brilliant work of art. This is a book I couldn't stop reading and when I couldn't read I would find my mind wandering to it in daydreams.
I found the translation to English did end up creating a few awkward scenes, but it didn't really take away from the story.I'm not likely to read anything else by this author - there are just too many other great books out there to spend my limited reading time on an average book. I bought this book after playing the video game "The Witcher", because I grew to really like the main character (which is who the book is about). Unfortunately, I wasn't as attached to him in "The Last Wish".The book was an OK read, but nothing special.
